The Historical Significance of Krishna Janmashtami

According to legend, Kansa, the brother of Queen Devaki, was forewarned that her eighth son would be the cause of his downfall. In fear, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev and ruthlessly killed their first six children. However, Krishna was saved from this fate as he was secretly sent out of the dungeon by King Vasudeva. Krishna grew up and eventually fulfilled the prophecy by defeating and killing Kansa, liberating the people from his oppressive rule. Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the love, warmth, and beauty embodied by Lord Krishna.

This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated with great enthusiasm on both the 6th and 7th of September.

Devotees observe fasts, wear traditional attire, bathe, and adorn Lord Krishna's idols with new clothing and jewelry. They seek blessings, decorate homes with flowers and rangoli, and offer favorite items like white butter, milk, and curd during puja.

Temple festivities begin before dawn and continue until midnight, marking Lord Krishna's birth. Devotees gather for kirtan and chant Krishna's name.

Enthusiasts form human pyramids to break an earthen pot filled with butter and curd, symbolizing Lord Krishna's playful nature.
